It's a simple idea. To come together on a regular basis to talk, socialize and learn strategies to live your best life. For years we have had a monthly support group in Parksville, but once a month just isn't enough for some people, so the idea of the "Speak Easy" was born. A place to come together and speak freely in a private and safe space. To learn more about what living with PD really means, and to talk to others who are travelling the same path as you. |
What will it look like?
We will gather every Tuesday at 3 pm upstairs at the new Quality Foods in Parksville (there is an elevator for those who have trouble with stairs). Quality Foods has kindly offered this room up to us at no charge. All forms of refreshments and snacks will be available (including Tapas!) and you are encouraged to bring your purchases into the meeting room to enjoy. The meeting room is a lovley space with large windows, a state of the art audio/visual system and a private deck if you need a breath of air.
Each week there will be a different topic, and the meeting will start with a Webinar/Video featuring an expert(s) discussing the topic at hand. The group will then have a discussion and talk about their own experiences with the weekly topic. Following this, the group will be encouraged to discuss any other issues that they wish relating to Parkinson's Disease.
I am very excited to begin this adventure, and I am confident it is going to be a positive addition to our lives!

Q. What is the Speakeasy?
A. Speakeasys will alternate between the following formats:
A. Due to the room capacity (26 people max) and the desire to keep these meetings "intimate", pre-registration is required
Q. Does it cost anything to participate
A. Quality Foods has graciously offered the room to us, so there is no charge to the participants. You are encouraged to purchase refreshments and/or snacks at QF rather than bringing your own if at all possible
Q. Is to hard to access the meeting room?
A. The meeting room is upstairs at Quality Foods in Parksville, Luckily there is an elevator that you can access from either inside QF on the ground floor, or directly from outside in the parking lot (to the right of the main entrance)
Q. Can we eat or drink in the room?
A. Yes! Coffee and tea etc... are available just outside the meeting room. It is a licensed room as well, so beer and wine are options, as well as a wide variety of food options. And the best news? Tuesday is $5 Tapas Day! (Tapas are delicious appetizers)
Q. Is this basically the same as our regular support group only once a week now?
A. No. The Speakeasy is designed to be "participant-driven", which essentially means that the group will run the show. Although there will be a topic each week as a starting point, I am hopeful that there will lots of conservation where you can compare notes, ask questions or even just talk about how you are doing.
Q. How do I register? Do I have to register each week?
A. To avoid confusion. I am asking everyone to register for only one session at a time. To do this, you simply have to let Doug know you are coming. How do you do that?

A. Speakeasys will alternate between the following formats:
- Focus on a weekly “topic” related to PD (ie. Sleep issues, dealing with depression, etc…), with a video/webinar related to the week’s topic, followed by an open discussion among the group and socializing opportunities. Participation in the group conversation is highly encouraged!
- “Coffee chats”: non-structured group socialization with no particular theme. A great way to connect with others in an informal settings
- Focus on group projects (ie. Using the “Strength Based Approach” to maximize your health care potential)
